DURHAM, N.C. – No. 3 Duke (8-2, 2-1 ACC) snapped No. 6 Syracuse's (4-3, 0-3 ACC) two-game winning streak with a 21-7 victory on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils used a 10-goal run in the first half to take command of the game and win their fourth in a row against the Orange.
Junior Randy Staats led Syracuse with two goals and one assist. Five other Orange players scored one goal, including midfielder Derek DeJoe who tallied his first goal of the season in the opening quarter.
For Duke, Deemer Class scored six times and added four assists to finish with a game-high 10 points. Jordan Wolf (five goals, three assists), Myles Jones (five goals, one assist), Christian Walsh (one goal, six assists) and Josh Dionne (four goals) also had big days for the Blue Devils.
"It just wasn't a good day," Orange head coach John Desko said. "We weren't able to get anything going offensively. I'm disappointed defensively. We slid late to them and didn't seem to understand who they were. We worked on it all week. I thought we were as prepared to play, especially defensively, against this group as anyone we've played this year."
Syracuse led 2-1 in the first four minutes before 10 consecutive Blue Devil goals over the next 12:23 gave the hosts a commanding 11-2 advantage with 12:18 left in the second quarter. Duke faceoff specialist Brendan Fowler keyed the surge by winning 10-of-11 faceoffs during that stretch and the Blue Devils took advantage as Jones and Class combined for six goals in the run.
Staats finally ended the Orange scoring drought with an unassisted goal at the 7:16 mark of the second quarter to make the score 11-3. The two sides traded goals for the remainder of the period and the Blue Devils took a 13-4 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Duke did not allow the Orange to get back into the game. The Blue Devils outscored Syracuse 8-3 over the last 30 minutes to produce the final score.
Orange goalies Dominic Lamolinara and Bobby Wardwell both played a half in the cage. Lamolinara started and made five saves in the first two quarters. Wardwell played the second half and finished with a season-high 11 saves.
Duke goalie Luke Aaron played the majority of the game and registered five saves for the Blue Devils to earn the victory.
Fowler won 24 of the game's 31 faceoffs to lead Duke to a 24-7 advantage at the X. He won most of them himself, picking up a career-high 18 ground balls. In addition, Fowler's performance helped the Blue Devils to a 57-27 advantage in shots for the game and a 38-17 margin in ground balls.
Syracuse returns to the Carrier Dome next weekend for a conference matchup with fellow ACC newcomer Notre Dame. The Orange and Irish square off Saturday, March 29 at 12 p.m. on ESPNU.
Game Notes: Freshman faceoff specialist Joe DeMarco made his college debut and was 3-for-11 (.273) at the dot … Senior Billy Ward made his first start in the midfield, filling in for the injured Henry Schoonmaker … Defensive midfielder Tom Grimm recorded his first point of the year with an assist in the fourth quarter … Kevin Rice's third-quarter goal extended his goal-scoring streak to six games.
