HAMILTON, N.Y. – Freshman Christina Clermont had the Colgate hitters swinging and missing all day, as she recorded her first career complete game in an 11-1 win for Syracuse on Thursday, April 17.
Clermont struck out a personal-best 12 batters, surpassing her former mark of eight and allowed just one run on four hits. She became the eighth pitcher in school history to record at least 12 strikeouts in a game, joining classmate Sydney O'Hara who accomplished this season as well.
Syracuse (20-19, 10-8 ACC) has now won seven of its last eight games and 15-of-21 to get above .500 for the first time since sitting at 4-3 on Feb. 21. Colgate (9-21) dropped its second game in a row after winning four-of-five.
Freshman Nicole Lundstrom finished 2-for-4 with a home run and matched a career high with four runs batted in and scored three times. It was her 14th multi-hit game of the campaign. Sophomore Corinne Ozanne was 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs and senior Shirley Daniels reached base all four times, going 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Daniels now has a multi-hit game in her last five contests.
Daniels wasted no time putting a run on the scoreboard for Syracuse, leading off with a home run five pitches into the game for her first career leadoff blast. It was just the fifth time in program history a Syracuse player led off the game with a homer and the first time since April 28, 2006 when Tonye McCorkle did it. Two batters later, Ozanne followed with her third long ball in the past two days, making it 2-0 after one inning.
The next inning, Syracuse plated two more runs on Daniels' bloop single with the bases loaded that drove in a run and Lundstrom's RBI groundout. Lundstrom was back at it again in the fourth, crushing a two-run homer to extend the Orange lead to 6-0.
After failing to score a run in the fifth, SU added another two runs in the sixth for an 8-0 advantage. Sophomore Riley Johnson scored on an error after reaching base on a pinch hit single and a two-out single by O'Hara drove in Lundstrom.
Prior to Syracuse's offensive output, Clermont was wheeling and dealing, striking out seven batters in a row from the first to third innings. She didn't allow her first hit until a two-out double by Katie Bushee in the third. In just the fourth frame, Clermont tied her career high in strikeouts and reached 11 by the fifth after striking out the side. The first, and only run came off the bat of Bushee as she started off the sixth with a solo shot.
SU capped the scoring with three more runs in the final inning for the final tally of 11-1. With one out and runners on second and third, Lundstrom singled to center to plate freshman Kristina Kinsey, who walked in her first collegiate plate appearance. Ozanne followed with a double to left center that brought in Daniels and Lundstrom rounded out the scoring by crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Syracuse faces its toughest challenge to date this weekend, a three-game series at nationally-ranked No. 9/8 Florida State. The set, which will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 19 at 5 p.m. and end Sunday, April 20 at 3 p.m., will be featured on the ESPN family of networks. Saturday's games will be streamed on ESPN3 with the finale taking place on ESPNU.
