SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked No. 69 Syracuse tennis teams closes out its regular season with a pair of home matches against No. 74 Wake Forest and No. 24 Notre Dame. The Orange will host Wake Forest on Friday, April 18 at 11 a.m. and then take on Notre Dame the following day on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Orange (4-13, 4-8 ACC) was swept, 7-0, this past weekend at No. 15 Clemson and No. 32 Georgia Tech. Senior Maddie Kobelt and freshman Valeria Salazar teamed up for SU's only win on the weekend, upsetting the 12th-ranked doubles pairing in the nation from Clemson.
However, Syracuse fell to No. 15 Clemson, 7-0.
DUO CRACKS DOUBLES RANKINGS:
Senior Maddie Kobelt and freshman Valeria Salazar became Syracuse's most recent nationally-ranked doubles team when the pair jumped into the ITA rankings at No. 72 on April 15. It's the first time SU has a ranked duo since Emily Harman and current assistant coach Alessondra Parra ended a six-week run in the polls on April 24, 2012.
PROTECTING HOME COURT:
Since interim head coach Shelly George joined the Syracuse tennis program during the 2006-07 season, the SU tennis team is 55-9 in the Drumlins Tennis Center, including a 50-6 mark since 2008. That span included back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2010 and 2011 and a 25-home win streak that went from Feb. 22, 2009 through Feb. 24, 2012.
UNPARRALLED SUCCESS:
SU has won three matches this season against top-75 teams from the ITA, with all three versus teams ranked 50 or higher. That is the most in a single-season dating back to at least 2001, and believed to be the most by a Syracuse team in just one season.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
WAKE FOREST: After beginning the season 7-0 with three wins over teams ranked by the ITA, the Demon Deacons (11-11, 3-10 ACC) lost six-of-seven and have dropped their last four matches to even their overall record. In each of their 11 victories this season, Wake Forest has started by winning the doubles point. Sophomore Andrea Retolaza leads the Demon Deacons at the number one spot and is one of seven players on the roster to have tallied double-digit this season.
NOTRE DAME: The Fighting Irish (14-8, 7-6 ACC) is currently on a six-game winning, sweeping their opponents, 7-0, in five of them. Notre Dame owns eight wins over teams included in the ITA rankings this year while all eight of its losses have come to squads ranked inside the top 26. Quinn Gleason enters the weekend ranked as the No. 37 singles player in the country. She also teams up with Britney Sanders to form the 10th-ranked doubles team.
SERIES HISTORY:
This marks the sixth time the Orange and Demon Deacons meet. Wake Forest holds the edge with a 4-1 record in the series history. SU defeated the Demon Deacons back in 1984 with a 7-2 win in Winston-Salem and Wake Forest has won all four since, including a 6-1 win in 2007.
Despite being conference members together in the BIG EAST until last year, Syracuse and Notre Dame haven't met on the court since 2010, a 4-0 triumph for the Fighting Irish in the BIG EAST Tournament to run its all-time record against Syracuse to 6-0. The last time the pair played each other in a regular-season match was in 2008.
UP NEXT:
Syracuse will head down to Cary, N.C. for its first Atlantic Coast Conference tournament which runs from Wednesday, April 23 through Sunday, April 27.
