SYRACUSE, N.Y.—The No. 69 Orange tennis team (5-13, 5-8 ACC) earned the first four points to defeat No. 74 Wake Forest (11-12, 3-11 ACC), 4-3 on its home courts on Friday afternoon at Drumlins. Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar were responsible for three of Syracuse's points, helping SU snap its three-game losing streak.
Rodgers and Safdar were the first to win their match, taking an 8-6 win over Wake Forest's Kimmy Guerin and Karen Forman in the third double pairing. The duo won its first game and never gave up its advantage, ultimately retiring Guerin and Forman.
Shortly after, Syracuse's No. 72 ranked doubles pair Maddie Kobelt and Valeria Salazar came back from an early one-game deficit to defeat Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner, 8-5 on court one to give the Orange a 1-0 advantage over the Deacons going into singles competition.
Rodgers earned the second team point with a decisive win over Luisa Fernandez on court two. She won her sets 6-3 and 6-0 to add to the Orange tally. Court four finished up next with Salazar dominating Wake's Samantha Asch, disallowing a single game to go the Deacons' way. She won in two straight sets of 6-0 decisions.
Courts five and six became the ones to watch as both Maria Avgerinos and Safdar had a one set advantage. Safdar would be the one to win the match for the Orange, earning the team's fourth point with scores of 6-3 and 6-4 against Zhang.
Syracuse closes out its regular season schedule tomorrow with a home contest against No. 24 Notre Dame at 1 p.m. at Drumlins.
