SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team takes a break from conference action as it hosts in-state rival Binghamton for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, April 9 beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the SU Softball Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT:
After two months of playing games on the road, Syracuse finally opened its 2014 home slate with a doubleheader versus rv/rv NC State, dropping the pair 8-6 and 7-0. The Orange took a 5-4 lead into the seventh following a four-run fifth, which featured a two-run double by freshman Nicole Lundstrom. Junior Julie Wambold finished the opener 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in and freshman Sydney O'Hara stuck out 11, finishing one out shy of the complete game. In the finale, Lundstrom racked up two more hits, posting hert team-best 11th multi-hit game of the season.
ACC SPRING SPORTSMANSHIP WEEK:
The Atlantic Coast Conference continues its sportsmanship awareness campaign by recognizing Spring Sportsmanship Week from Monday, April 7 through Sunday, April 13. ACC Sportsmanship Weeks are a campaign to emphasize sportsmanship as it relates to ACC teams, the conference and fans by designating one week during the fall, winter and spring seasons. At all ACC home competitions during Spring Sportsmanship Week, every league team will showcase its continued dedication to sportsmanship by participating in a pregame handshake.
LUNDSTROM REACHES BASE AT HIGH RATE:
Freshman Nicole Lundstrom has a knack for getting on base nearly 50-percent of the time in her first season. The rookie leads the Orange with a .375 batting average on 33 hits, which combined with her team-high 20 walks, brings her on-base percentage to .491. If Lundstrom can keep up that rate, she will be on pace to break the single-season school record of .472 which was set by Hallie Gibbs in 2010. Lundstrom's numbers are even better in ACC games, posting a .469 batting average while reaching base at a clip of .630. She currently rankes seventh in the conference and 84th nationally in walks per game at 0.65.
WATSON MAKES HOME RUN HISTORY:
Senior Jasmine Watson blasted career home run number 39 - a new Syracuse record - with a grand slam in the first game of a doubleheader at Maryland. She followed that up with her 40th career shot in the nightcap, marking the fourth straight game with a homer and six in the last six, dating back to the finale at Virginia. The streak started with a multi-homer effort, the fourth of Watson's career. No other player in Syracuse history has more than three. She currently ranks 22 in the nation at 0.32 homers per game and is 20th in the country among active Division I NCAA softball players.
SCOUTING NC STATE:
Binghamton (12-10, 3-0 American East) has won three games in a row and is currently undefeated in conference play. The Bearcats started off the season with a victory over South Florida, who has been receiving votes throughout the season. Sophomore catcher Taylor Chaffee leads the Bearcats with four homers and is tied for first on the team with 14 RBIs. Binghamton is led in the circle by pitcher Demi Laney who is currently 10-4 with a 2.74 ERA to go along with eight complete games.
SERIES HISTORY:
Excluding current and former conference affiliation, Syracuse's 18 meetings with Binghamton is second to only the series history with Cornell. The Orange own a 16-2 advantage in the series with the Bearcats and have won 13 of the last 14 meetings, with seven of those coming in a shutout effort.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Syracuse returns to both conference play and the road when it travels to Pittsburgh for a crucial three-game series on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13. SU is 15-8 all-time against the Panthers, including three striaght wins and 10 in the last 11 meetings.
