SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse field hockey's Emma Russell has been named to Ireland's U21 national team that will compete at the EuroHockey Junior Championship II in Vienna, Austria on July 14-20, the Irish Hockey Association has announced.
The Orange's rising junior forward is one of 18 athletes selected for the Irish U21 squad from a pool of 25 players named to the training panel back on Feb. 25. The training camp took place June 20-23 and commenced again on July 4-6.
Competition kicks offs for the Irish team on Tuesday, July 15 with a match vs. Lithuania at 7 a.m. Eastern Time and continues the next day with a game against Scotland at 7 a.m. ET. From there, the teams get seeded to determine opponents over the final three days of competition.
This will be the third different level in which Russell, an Enniskerry native, will represent her home country at European championships. She previously was a member of the Irish U16 and U18 national teams.
Russell recently competed at the Irish Hockey U21 Interprovincial Tournament. The All-ACC forward and Enniskerry native helped lead her Leinster squad to a second-place finish in the tournament which ran Feb. 7-9 at Three Rock Rovers.
After a strong freshman campaign in 2012 in which she tallied nine goals and four assists in helping lead Syracuse to the Final Four, Russell took her game to a new level in 2013, scoring 12 goals and tallying 11 assists for a team-best 35 points. An explosive offensive threat, four of her goals were game-winners as the Orange ranked No. 2 in the country in the final coaches poll.
Russell's 2013 accolades include being named All-ACC Second Team and Longstreth/NFHCA All-Mideast Region First Team.
