Sophomore helps his country reach final of international youth tournament
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Chris Nanco returned to the international stage this week to represent Canada at the 2014 Dale Farm Milk Cup, a prestigious youth tournament held annually in Northern Ireland. The sophomore forward helped his country advance to the final of the Elite section, and the Canadians finished the tournament with a 1-1-1 overall record.
Nanco played 30 minutes in a 2-0 victory against Mexico on July 28. Two days later, he was part of Canada's first XI and played all 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw versus China. In yesterday's final against Northern Ireland, Nanco came off the bench in the 68th minute and played the rest of a 1-0 loss to the host nation. The only goal of the championship match was scored by Northern Ireland's Aaron McEneff on a penalty kick early in the second half.
Nanco is no stranger to the world stage. He previously led Canada's U-17 squad to the silver medal at the 2011 CONCACAF U-17 Championship and an appearance in the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Syracuse's third-leading scorer last season, Nanco started 17-of-18 matches as a rookie and finished with nine points on four goals and one assist.
