SU volleyball begins its second season in the ACC hosting the Big Orange Tournament
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On Saturday August 30 and 31 the Syracuse University volleyball team will host Delaware State, Temple and Niagara in the Big Orange Tournament. The site for the collegiate volleyball tournament is SU's Women's Building, located on Comstock Avenue.
SU's first test is set for 11:00 AM against Delaware State. The match is the first of the day for the Orange with the second game slated for 6:30 PM against Temple. In between the 'Cuse Contests, Niagara will take on two consecutive opponents. The first will be at 1:30 PM against Temple and the second at 4:00 PM against Delaware State.
'Cuse has played well against Delaware State in its recent history. The all-time record stands at 2-0 in favor of Syracuse. Both victories were neutral contests. Temple has the all-time series knotted up with Coach Yelin's squad at 7-7.
The following day Syracuse will square off against Niagara at 1:30 PM, just after the Temple-Delaware State matchup at 11:00 AM.
The Orange are coming off their first season in the ACC in which they finished 16-16 overall with an 11-9 record within their conference. SU finished eighth in the ACC standings and had one First Team All-ACC performer in Silvi Uattara.
Uattara is one of seven starters returning in 2014 and is just another All-ACC quality season away from qualifying for the Syracuse volleyball program record book in kills and kills per set. Another returner Coach Yelin has been openly expressed high hopes for this season was his newfound setter, Gosia Wlaszczuk. The junior is coming off of a back injury that hindered her last year and is learning to play setter this preseason.
Lindsay McCabe is also back for her final season as a member of the Orange and is just 12 block assists away the second most in SU history. She also only needs 31 total blocks to have the third most all-time and is 138 total blocks away from second all-time. In 2013 she recorded 159 total blocks and ranked second in the ACC.
With the new season comes a new freshman class. It's a large one too. Seven freshmen join the Orange in 2014 and the team also welcomes a transfer right side hitter from the University of Georgia in Stacey Smith. With the eight total newcomers on a 15-man roster, the arrivals make up more than half of the team's roster. Included in this year's freshman class is the tallest setter in the ACC, Lucie Guttakovskaia. The 6-3, Moscow, Russian Federation native was the latest addition to the team and is in just her second week of practice.
