Orange picks up second top-40 win in three matches
The No. 57 Syracuse tennis team rallied for a come-from-behind 4-3 win over No. 35 Princeton after trailing 2-0 in Sunday's finale of the ITA kickoff weekend.
The Orange moved to 3-1 on the year with the win – its second win of the young season over a top-40 opponent.
"That was a great college match today," said head coach Younes Limam. "The ladies fought their hearts out and kept finding ways. We are so proud of them and very excited to play our first home match next Saturday"
'Cuse, who dropped the doubles point and first singles match to go down 2-0, rallied for three-straight singles wins from Rhiann Newborn, Breanna Bachini and Komal Safdar before Valeria Salazar picked up a third-set win in the last match running to seal the victory for Syracuse.
Salazar defeated Amanda Muliawan 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to take the match.
The Orange also saw a major comeback from Bachini. She rallied after dropping the first set 1-6 to pull off 6-4 and 6-1 wins in the final two sets to Caroline Joyce.
Safdar and Newborn each took their matches in straight sets. Safdar defeated Dorothy Tang 7-5, 6-3 and Newborn topped Alanna Wolff 6-1, 7-6.
In doubles play, the tandem of Amanda Rodgers and Newborn fell to Katerine Steffensen and Lindsay Graff 6-2 and Nicole Mitchell and Olivia Messineo lost 6-1 to Wolff and Emily Hann.
The No. 59 ranked duo of Salazar and Safdar were trailing 4-3 to Muliawan and Tang at the time their match was halted.
In addition to Princeton taking the doubles point, they also earned points from Steffensen, who defeated Mitchell 6-0, 6-2, and Graff, who took down Rodgers 7-5, 6-4.
Syracuse will next return home on Saturday when the team hosts Cornell in the home opener. Action is scheduled to get underway at Noon.
