PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Orange women's ice hockey team dominated Providence in non-conference play on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Friars by a final score of 4-0 at Schneider Arena.
Four different Syracuse (2-3) players found the back of the net, including junior Morgan Blank who registered the first collegiate goal of her career. The Orange bounced back from a tough loss on Saturday to handily defeat Providence (0-4).
"Today was a big bounce back win for us after a disappointing loss yesterday," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "The team played a full, solid 60 minutes from start to finish. We made some different combinations and I thought the kids responded well."
Syracuse had 10 players finish the day with a point or more. Junior Larissa Martyniuk and sophomore Megan Quinn each registered two assists in the win for the Orange. Syracuse outshot Providence by a total of 38-10, dominating the entire contest.
Senior goaltender Jenn Gilligan made a save on all 10 shots that came her way, leading the Orange to the shutout. For Providence, Madison Myers made 34 saves on 38 total shots.
The Orange got the scoring started in the first period at the 6:57 mark as senior Jessica Sibley collected a pass from Quinn, ripping a shot past Myers for the game's first goal. Sibley's goal led Syracuse into the second frame with a 1-0 advantage and the scoring was not done there.
Under three minutes into the second period, Blank registered the first goal of her collegiate career, burying a shot on a pass from senior Nicole Renault. Freshman Karleigh Scully was awarded the secondary assist on the Blank goal, which is the first point of her collegiate career. The Orange was not done there in the second frame, increasing its lead to three as senior Nicole Ferrara continued her scoring streak with a goal at the 10:49 mark, taking Syracuse into the second intermission with a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Emily Costales made it 4-0 five minutes into the third period with a power-play goal. The Orange never looked back as they secured their second win of the season with the 4-0 win.
Next up for Syracuse is CHA rival RIT on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. RIT defeated Syracuse in the CHA Championship last season by a final score of 2-1 in double overtime.
"We have veterans on our team that remember who ended our season last year," Flanagan said. "We feel we have a good rivalry with a well-coached and good team. It is good to have a big win headed into Wednesday's game."
