LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Freshman Roos Weers scored the game-winning goal while senior goalkeeper Jess Jecko was stellar in net for the Syracuse field hockey team on Friday night. The No. 1 Orange defeated No. 11 Louisville by a final score of 2-1 in ACC play.
Improving to 12-0 ties Syracuse (12-0, 4-0 ACC) for the second best start in program history behind just 2008 when the squad began the season 14-0.
The Orange returned to ACC play on Friday night with a battle against a hungry Cardinals squad. After Louisville (7-5, 0-4 ACC) tied the game up in the 57th minute on a penalty corner, Weers iced the contest by burying a penalty stroke with only five minutes remaining.
"I am really proud of the way our team played tonight and the way they stayed composed," head coach Ange Bradley said. "We played a very aggressive, physical team in Louisville and found a way to win."
Jecko finished the contest with four vital saves, including multiple diving efforts to keep the Cardinals off the board. The Orange outshot Louisville 9-7 in the match, connecting for six shots on target.
"Jess as well as Lies Lagerweij and Laura Hurff played an outstanding game defensively," Bradley said. "Jess had a world-class save to keep us in the game."
Alma Fenne got things going offensively early for Syracuse, ripping a shot top shelf past Louisville goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran just five minutes in. The Fenne goal stood up for the entire half as the Orange took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Both sides battled neck and neck in the second half until the Cardinals finally found life. Elisa Garcia connected for the equalizer in the 57th minute on a penalty corner. After scoreless action over the next nine minutes, the Orange were awarded a penalty stroke and it was Weers finishing past McFerran.
The Orange will stay on the road for its next contest when the squad takes on Indiana on Sunday at noon. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
