
Piacentini’s Game Winner Propels Orange Past Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, MO.- Senior Melissa Piacentini scored the game-winning goal for the Syracuse women's ice hockey team against Lindenwood on Friday night, leading the Orange past the Lady Lions by a final score of 3-1 in College Hockey America play.
With Syracuse (5-5, 3-1 CHA) up 2-1 late in the third period, senior Nicole Ferrara scored an empty-net goal to seal the victory for the Orange. The win for Syracuse snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for Lindenwood (3-5-1, 1-1-1 CHA).
The Orange outshot the Lady Lions 35-25 in the contest, as senior goaltender Jenn Gilligan finished with 24 saves, securing Syracuse two big points in the conference. Lindenwood goaltender Jolene deBruyn registered 32 saves, giving up two goals in the loss.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore Dakota Derrer put Syracuse up 1-0 just over four minutes into the second period. Nearly 10 minutes later, Britannia Gillanders tied the game up as both teams headed into the third frame notched up at one.
At the 6:31 mark in the third period, Piacentini gave Syracuse the eventual game-winning goal, blasting a shot past deBruyn to put the Orange up 2-1. Syracuse held Lindenwood scoreless for the remainder of the game, as Ferrara's empty netter gave Syracuse a late 3-1 lead.
