Bastein and Sellers take home wins in opener
Pascal Bastein won the men's triple jump and freshman Kadejhia Sellers took first in the 300-meter run, while other members of the Orange turned in strong showings at the Greg Page Relays to open the 2015-16 indoor track season.
Bastein won the event by leaping to a distance of 14.27 meters, which set a new career-best mark for the sophomore, and bested Cornell's Sean Waterton to take the crown by 0.03 meters.
Sellers led a strong Orange contingent in her event, finishing the race in 39.30 seconds, 0.10 ahead of Cornell's Udeme Akpaete for the win. Brittany Belo (5th/40.96), Danielle Delgado (18th/42.39) and Maya Perry (71st/48.53) also competed for the Orange in the event.
Delgado also took 13th in the 60-meter dash (8.06).
In the 60-meter hurdles, it was all-Orange in the finals, with Syracuse alums who now compete for Syracuse Elite Ramon Sosa (7.98) and Donald Pollitt (7.99) taking first and second, while freshman Richard Floyd (8.21) finished his debut race in fourth. David Gilstrap was the third-fastest qualifier into the finals, but finished in eighth.
Two other freshmen had strong debuts as well, with Zack Warden taking sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.00) and Nia Gibson finished 24th in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:26.43.
Regine Hunter finished third in the triple jump for 'Cuse, leaping to 12.01 meters. Jabari Butler also had a strong day jumping, taking fifth in the high jump at 1.99 meters.
Paul Lovell, who won the 5k cross country race at Cornell earlier this season, finished fifth in the 500-meter run for the Orange on Saturday in a time of 1:07.02 to lead a trio of Orange competitors in the event. Freshmen Kokeith Perry and Sam Somera each made their collegiate debuts in the race, taking 32nd and 34th respectively.
The distance medley relay squad of Elizabeth Reynolds, Shasche Allen, Natalie Zazzarra and Bridget Twomey finished second to Fredonia on the afternoon. The four completed the race in 12:40.33.
The Orange entered two groups in the men's 4x800-meter relay, with the group of Kevyn Hoyos, Robbie Hall, Andy Paladino and Mickey Burke took third in 7:57.98, while Juris Silenieks, Nick Ryan, Simon Smith and Adam Palamar followed closely behind in 7:59.20 to finish fourth.
In the women's 4x800-meter relay, Stephanie Bitcon, Mary Malone, Beth Wright and Chelsie Pennello finished third in 9:47.61.
Syracuse returns to action at the Ramapo Opener on Friday, Jan. 15 in New York City.
