SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's ice hockey team scored the first goal against Penn State on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as both the Orange and Nittany Lions skated to a 1-1 overtime finish at Tennity Ice Pavilion in College Hockey America play.
Â
Junior Jessica Sibley gave Syracuse (8-9-2, 5-1-2 CHA) a 1-0 edge at the 11:51 mark in the first frame, but Penn State (4-10-4, 1-3-4 CHA) eventually battled back. Laura Bowman evened the game up with seven minutes left in the second period to send each team home with a point.
Â
"I thought we came out on fire and were firing from all cylinders," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We generated some good scoring opportunities, but just weren't able to cash in. I am a bit disappointed that we only came away with a point, but looking at the bigger picture, three out of four points over the weekend is something we will take."
Â
The Orange outshot the Nittany Lions 41-23 in the contest, including a 14-5 edge in the first frame. Penn State goaltender Celine Whitlinger had a big performance in between the pipes, finishing with 40 saves. Senior netminder Jenn Gilligan made 22 saves for Syracuse, blocking away 11 of 12 shots in the second frame.
