SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The two most storied programs in college lacrosse meet for the 53rd time on Saturday, March 14 when No. 1 Syracuse (5-0) hosts No. 17 Johns Hopkins (3-3) at 2 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
The Orange and Blue Jays are the two winningest programs in Division I lacrosse history. They have met at least once every year dating back to the 1983 NCAA title game.
The Orange is one of five remaining unbeaten teams in Division I lacrosse after pulling away for a 14-6 win against St. John's in the second Cobb County Lacrosse Classic. The Blue Jays recently snapped a two-game losing streak with a 13-8 home victory against Navy.
LORDS OF THE RING
SU and Hopkins have combined to win nearly half (20) of the 44 NCAA championships since men's lacrosse became an NCAA-sponsored sport in 1971. The Orange has an NCAA-record 11 titles. Hopkins has nine.
Overall, the Blue Jays have appeared in a record 18 NCAA title games and is 9-9 in those contests. Syracuse is second with 17 championship game appearances. The Orange is 11-6 in its championship tilts.
WINNING TRADITIONS
The Orange and Blue Jays are the two winningest programs in Division I lacrosse. They boast a combined record of 1,809-640-31 (.736).
Johns Hopkins is the school that currently has more than 900 all-time victories and enters Saturday's game with 947 wins since it began playing the sport in 1883. Syracuse is second on that list with 862 all-time wins dating back to 1916.
LENDING A HELPING HAND
Syracuse ranks third in the country in assists per game (10.0). Brown leads the country with 10.25 assists per contest.
Overall, 65.8 percent of SU's goals this season have been assisted. The Orange has 50 assists on 76 goals.
Randy Staats and Kevin Rice are in the top 20 nationally in assists per game. Rice is fifth (2.8) and Staats is tied for 18th (2.2).
MASTER OF THE MAN-UP
Dylan Donahue leads the nation with eight extra-man goals. Half of Donahue's team-leading 16 goals have come with the man-advantage, and he's accounted for two-thirds of the Orange's 12 man-up tallies this season.
Donahue's eight extra-man goals ties his career total coming into this year, and by himself he has more extra-man goals than 35 of the 68 teams playing Division I lacrosse.
SCOUTING JOHNS HOPKINS
After years spending years as one of the sport's independent giants, the Blue Jays are in their first season as an associate member of the Big Ten. They open league play later this month versus Rutgers.
Ryan Brown leads the Hopkins offense. He is tied for fifth nationally in goals per game (3.5) and has 21 goals on the year. Brown scored a career-high eight goals in last year's game against the Orange at Homewood Field.
Brown is flanked by a pair of Stanwicks on attack. Older brother, Wells, leads the club in assists (14) and has 22 points (8 goals, 14 assists). Freshman, Shack Stanwick, has 10 goals and seven assists.
Freshman midfielder Patrick Fraser has seven goals, all on extra-man. As a team the Blue Jays have earned a whopping 43 man-up opportunities in six games and have converted on 20 of them for a 46.5 percent success rate.
Eric Schneider is the team's starting goalie. He has 44 saves, but has stopped just 44 percent of the shots he's faced. Schneider's goals-against average is 9.48.
Hopkins grad Dave Pietramala is 184-75 overall as a head coach, including a 161-58 record at his alma mater. Pietramala is fourth among active Division I coaches with a .710 winning percentage. He guided the Blue Jays to national championships in 2005 and 2007 and has the reached the NCAA title game four times since taking over the Blue Jays in 2001.
THE JOHNS HOPKINS SERIES
The Blue Jays own a 27-24-1 advantage in the all-time series. Hopkins dominated the rivalry's early years, winning 12 of the first 15 meetings. The Orange has been victorious in seven of the last eight matchups.
SU owns a 9-8-1 advantage in games played in Syracuse and has won three straight at the Carrier Dome.
Hopkins is SU's most familiar postseason foe, with the Orange holding an 8-4 advantage in NCAA contests between the teams. Five postseason meetings have come with the NCAA championship on the line (1983, 1984, 1985, 1989, 2008). SU is 3-2 against the Blue Jays in title tilts, defeating Hopkins to win NCAA championships in 1983, 1989 and 2008.
