Syracuse's sweep of Virginia eliminates postseason hopes for the Cavaliers
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Jocelyn Cater struck out 17 batters in 10 innings of work en route to a win and a save in Syracuse's sweep of Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium. The offense supported its pitching staff with 21 runs to defeat the Cavaliers 7-4 in game one and 14-9 in game two. The pair of victories deny Virginia of any postseason hopes.
Syracuse was clutch with two outs, scoring 10 runs when facing the end of its half inning. Julie Wambold recorded her 100th career RBI in the final game of the day with a three-run home run.
Game One Highlights
More K's For Cater In Victory
After two scoreless innings of play it was the Cavaliers that struck first as a pair of walks with one down led to two runs as the ensuing two batters picked up a run batted in each. Now trailing Virginia 2-0 the Orange exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning after the first two batters were retired.
O'Hara kicked off the surge with a two-run shot to right-center following a walk by Ozanne, tying the game at two. Syracuse continued to rally as Wambold and Chitkowski reached on a walk and a hit by pitch, setting up a two-run double off the center field fence to give 'Cuse a 4-2 lead. Dombrowski was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat and Toczynski followed up with a single to left, loading the bases for a bases-clearing double by Doane to give the Orange a 7-2 lead after three.
Cater was masterful through the next three innings, holding off the Cavaliers until they tagged her for a pair on a home run with two out in the top of the seventh. The homer was all the success UVA would have as Cater struck out the next batter to secure the 7-4 victory.
Game Two Highlights
Bombs Away
Virginia used a two-out single following a double to jump on the board to take a 1-0 in the first but didn't hold the lead for long as Syracuse has a rebuttal prepared in the bottom of the inning. Doane singled and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fernandez to begin the 'Cuse half of the first. In an attempt to pitch around Ozanne she reached first after being hit by a pitch which ultimately led to a two-out three-run blast from Wambold to claim a 3-1 lead after an inning of play.
Larkin held off the Cavalier in the second but was hit for two runs in the third, one of which was unearned. Virginia took advantage of back-to-back hits to begin the inning, scoring the two baserunners on a groundout and an error.
However, with the score knotted at three Syracuse once again had an answer. Doane and Fernandez kicked the bottom of the inning off with back-to-back base knocks and following a walk by Ozanne, O'Hara came through with a single to drive in Doane and Fernandez, hoisting 'Cuse to a 5-3 advantage through three.
The Cavaliers quickly tied the game up with a leadoff home run and a single and a double to drive in a pair and tie the game at five in the fourth. Their bats went on to claim a 7-5 advantage on a fielder's choice and a double.
Syracuse again refused to allow Virginia any momentum as Doane led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to cut the deficit to one and following a single from Fernandez, Ozanne roped a two-run shot to left to take an 8-7 lead.
With a one-run lead the decision was made to relieve Larkin with Cater who continued her dominance from game one. The Canadian hurler threw a scoreless fifth and immediately received some insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.
'Cuse added six more runs on three four-baggers in the fifth to secure its lead. Chitkowski led off with a home run and after a single by Burkhardt and a walk by Toczynski, Doane launched her second home run of the game. Fernandez kept the rally going with a single and soon scored on Ozanne's second homer of the contest, busting the game open, 14-7.
Virginia gave a fight in the final two innings as it recorded a run in each but it couldn't dig itself out of the hole, falling short of Syracuse, 14-9.
