Katie Zafres remains in second after sixth-place finish at Hamburg Triathlon
Former Orange track star Katie Zaferes (formerly Katie Hursey) finished sixth this past weekend at the 2015 ITU World Triathlon in Hamburg, to head into the final-three races of the World Triathlon Series in second place.
Zaferes' 3645 points in the elite women's division is just 355 points behind fellow American Gwen Jorgensen. Just two events remain before the Grand Final in the 10-triathlon series, with the Vattenfall World Triathlon in Stockholm, Sweden (Aug. 22), ITU World Triathlon Edmonton, Canada (Sept. 5) set to take place before the Grand Final in Chicago.
At Syracuse, Zaferes was a two-time All-American and holds the school record for the 3000-meter steeplechase while also competing in cross country for the Orange. She began her triathlete career after graduating from Syracuse in 2012.Â
Zafres has positioned herself to be a leading contender to represent the United States at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. To do so, she'll have to qualify at the Grand Final in Chicago, which begins on Sept. 15.Â
