SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Matthew Johann, a USA High Performance Volleyball coaching staff member and graduate of Division III men's volleyball powerhouse Juniata College joined the Orange volleyball staff as an assistant coach, Syracuse head volleyball coach Leonid Yelin announced Monday.
"We are very excited to have Matt join our program," Yelin said. "He is young and energetic and will bring a lot of enthusiasm to the team. As a Long Island native, Matt will be a great local addition to the staff. He truly loves the game of volleyball and we are very fortunate to have somebody as passionate as Matt be a part of the program."
Johann comes to Syracuse after serving as a graduate assistant coach of the women's volleyball program at Westminster College, working with a squad that produced three all-conference honorees and qualified for conference tournament postseason play this past season. He was responsible for all aspects of player development and program management including statistical data, practice planning, scouting reports, and academic achievement.
While serving as a student assistant coach at Juniata College, Johann was a part of a Men's DIII National Runner-Up team that boasted four AVCA All-Americans. He was responsible for most aspects of player development and was a coordinator with Special Olympics of Pennsylvania tournaments during his time there.
Johann has been serving as a coach for USA High Performance Volleyball since 2012, working mostly with the A2 and A3 boys and girls high performance programs. In his latest campaign, he served as an associate head coach for the 2015 Select A3 Girls' High Performance Program in Grand Rapids, Mich. and also served as an assistant coach for the 2015 Youth A2 Boys' High Performance Program in Colorado Springs, Colo.
A native of Long Island, N.Y., Johann graduated with a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a minor in education from Juniata College in 2014.
