SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Despite the Syracuse women's ice hockey team outshooting Mercyhurst 40-14, including a 17-0 edge in the third period, the Orange lost to the Lakers by a final score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Arena.
With the series split, Syracuse (10-11-3, 6-2-2 CHA) moves into second place in College Hockey America. Backed by an impressive 39-save performance from goaltender Sarah McDonnell, Mercyhurst (10-8-4, 7-1-2 CHA) controls first place in the conference.
After falling behind 3-0, the Orange were unable to get on the board until the 12:19 mark in the third period when it was senior Nicole Ferrara going top shelf to beat McDonnell. Syracuse dominated the control of play for majority of the afternoon, but costly penalties and missed offensive opportunities proved to be the difference.
The Lakers scored their first two goals of the game on power plays, taking a 2-0 lead into the second period. Rachael Smith then made it 3-0 in favor of Mercyhurst on a break away, beating senior netminder Jenn Gilligan to send the Lakers into the third period with a three-goal advantage.
Gilligan made 11 saves on 14 shots that included eight saves in the first frame.
Both sides served seven penalties during the entirety of the game, but the Lakers were the team to take advantage of their power-play opportunities that included a 5-on-3.
Syracuse will play a home-and-home with RIT on Friday, Jan. 22 and Jan. 23. The Orange will travel to RIT on Friday for a 7 p.m. start time and return home on Saturday. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
