Syracuse matches the program record with 15 3-pointers
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The RV/RV Syracuse University was feeling it from long range on Sunday afternoon in its 91-65 victory against Wake Forest at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Syracuse matched the program record with 15 3-point field goals made on the day.
Â
"We are very happy to be on the road and get a win," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "This is a great conference and any time you go on the road you are going to play against a very good basketball team. I give our kids a lot of credit. They came on the road and dealt with pressure late in the game."
Â
Redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes and senior guard Brianna Butler kicked off the contest with 3-point field goals made to take a 6-0 lead, 39 seconds into the game. It marked Butler's 300th 3-point field goal made in her collegiate career.
Â
The Orange (14-4, 4-1) never trailed against the Demon Deacons (9-9, 0-5), but the home team made it close at the end. Wake Forest made it a 12-point contest with 4:58 remaining, following an 8-0 run. Syracuse closed the game on a 20-6 run, coasting to a 26-point victory.
Â
Butler finished with 19 points on the day, knocking down five 3-point field goals against the Demon Deacons. The senior guard has made 304 3-pointers in her collegiate career. She is the nation's active leader in career 3-point field goals made.
Â
Junior guard Alexis Peterson also contributed 19 points and seven assists on Sunday afternoon. Peterson iced the game with nine free throws made in the final 10 minutes of competition.
Â
Syracuse will play its second straight contest away from the friendly confines of home when it takes on No. 3/3 Notre Dame on the road on Thursday evening. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend, Ind. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
