The Orange lose its second ACC contest in 2015-16
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 24 Syracuse University women's basketball lost its second Atlantic Coast Conference contest of the 2015-16 season, losing at No. 3/3 Notre Dame, 90-62, on Thursday night at Purcell Pavilion.
Â
"I thought our kids really stayed after it," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "I told our kids that we were not going to stop pressing. We weren't going to sit back in our zone. We are going to compete, even if we lose, 127-50. We are not going to start backing down because people weren't playing well. That's not how you move forward with your program and we are moving forward."
Â
Notre Dame (18-1, 6-0) came out hot in the first half and took a commanding 28-point advantage at the break against Syracuse (14-5, 4-2). The Fighting Irish was 23-for-34 from the field in the opening 20 minutes, making an astonishing 67 percent of its field goal attempts.
Â
The Orange attempted to mount a comeback to start the second half. Syracuse came out on a 15-5 run to make it an 18-point game, before Notre Dame took a timeout with 4:47 remaining in the frame. That was the closest it got, as the Irish recorded a 28-point win. SU kept pace with its host in the final 20 minutes, tying its opponent, 33-33, in the final two quarters played, but could not overcome the first half deficit.
Â
Senior guard Brianna Butler and junior guard Alexis Peterson each tallied 12 points to pace the club. Butler knocked down three 3-point field goals and now has 307 3-pointers made in her collegiate career.
Â
Redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes finished with nine points against the Fighting Irish. Sykes is six points shy of reaching the 1,000-point mark in her collegiate career. She would become 25th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Â
Syracuse will take on a nationally-ranked foe for the second straight game when it hosts No. 17/17 Louisville on Monday, Jan. 25. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome. The game will be broadcast on the Regional Sports Networks.
