From Downtown
With head coach Quentin Hillsman's encouragement, Syracuse has shown no fear when shooting from beyond the arc in 2015-16. Currently, the team ranks first in the Atlantic Coast Conference and eighth nationally in 3-point field goals made per game, averaging 9.5 3-pointers per contest.
Â
Senior guard Brianna Butler is a key reason for Syracuse's success from downtown. The nation's active leader in career 3-point field goals made, she averages 3.40 3-pointers per contest this season. She currently ranks first in the conference and third in the country in 3-point field goals made per contest.
Â
Redshirt senior guard Maggie Morrison broke out from beyond the arc in the squad's 86-50 victory against No. 12/12 Duke on Jan. 3. Morrison knocked down seven from downtown, one shy of matching the program single-game record.
Â
Last Time Out
Syracuse led for more than 35 minutes, but ultimately lost, 77-73, at North Carolina on Jan. 7 in Carmichael Arena. The loss snapped the Orange's two-game win streak against the Tar Heels.
Â
Syracuse came out firing in the opening minutes of the Atlantic Coast Conference clash. The Orange scored the first 10 points of the game, to take an early advantage 1:36 into the contest. Senior guard Brianna Butler and junior forward Isabella Slim each knocked down a 3-point field goal in that frame.
Â
North Carolina would not go away on its home floor. The Tar Heels crept back into the contest and took its first lead of the game with 4:07 remaining in regulation. Syracuse had its opportunities in the end, but could not prevail.
Â
Its best chance for a victory came with eight seconds left. Butler pulled up for a 3-point field goal, which would have given the squad a one-point advantage. The shot fell short and North Carolina sealed the win with four free throws made.
