Top-Four Battle Set for Friday as Orange Hold No. 4 Spot in Poll
10/4/2016 11:10:00 AM | Field Hockey
It'll be No. 4 vs. No. 2 on Friday at J.S. Coyne Stadium, after the No. 4 Syracuse field hockey team stayed ranked fourth in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll after a weekend sweep, while Friday's opponent Duke moved up to No. 2.
UConn kept the No. 1 spot for the second-straight week, garnering 952 points and 29 first place votes, while the Blue Devils were right behind with 921 points and nine first place votes. North Carolina sits in third with 906 points and nine first place votes, ahead of Syracuse with 871 points and three first place votes. Penn State rounds out the top five with 788 points in the poll this week.
Complete Poll
Duke will mark the highest ranked opponent Syracuse has faced since last year's NCAA title game when North Carolina was ranked first at the time. However, 'Cuse has had its fair share of tough tests already on the season as seven of its 11 games have come against ranked opponents, including three top-seven teams, which the Orange are 2-1 against thus far.
For the 41st-straight week, all-seven ACC programs are ranked, including five teams in the top 10 nationally. It's also the 94th-straight weekly poll Syracuse has been ranked in, including a string of 22-straight inside the top-10.
In addition to Friday's matchup with Duke, the Orange have two other dates lined up with teams currently included in the NFHCA poll. Virginia currently checks in at No. 10, while Boston University owns the No. 15 spot.
Friday's game will get underway at 5 p.m. and be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. There are also a number of promotions surrounding the game as it's the annual 'pink game' to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer, with fans in attendance getting a water bottle as the giveaway. It'll also be Girl Scout and Kids Day at J.S. Coyne Stadium, with special events for youth as well.
