Peter rowed for the Orange from 1965-69
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The connection that student-athletes have to their collegiate athletics programs is eternal. Over the years, some names become synonymous with the team they once competed for. Undoubtedly, when one speaks about the Syracuse men's rowing program, Joseph Peter '69 is always in the conversation.
Peter was an accomplished member of the Syracuse men's rowing team from 1965-69, serving as a coxswain. He never left the water, even after graduation, continuing to row on the national and international level, competing at the Henley Royal Regatta in England.
Despite his name no longer being on the roster, Peter continued to have a constant presence on the Orange men's rowing program. Peter was known to attend every Syracuse race that he could, often recognizable by his Orange shirt.
"Joey's presence around our boathouse and the Syracuse community has been felt since he graduated from Syracuse," head coach Dave Reischman said. "His generosity and spirit have impacted many generations of rowers and their families in the 52 years he has been involved with our program. He has created a legacy that will endure."
Peter was an extremely devout alumnus. He endowed the first men's rowing scholarship, the Joseph E. Peter Endowed Crew Scholarship Fund, and the Joseph E. Peter Endowed Crew Fund, which supported the shells in his name.
Peter was recognized several times for his contributions to the program. Four Syracuse shells are named for him and the coaches' office at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse bears his name. He was named a Syracuse LetterWinner of Distinction in 1996. Most recently, Peter was inducted in the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association Hall of Fame at the 2015 Evening at Ten Eyck.
Peter passed away on Nov. 3. His love for the Orange will always remain.
"I will always remember walking off the dock after home, and many away races, and the first person I always would see was Joey," added Reischman. "He was always wearing an Orange shirt. When I would thank him for coming he would always respond with, 'This is my team, Coach!' He honestly believed his blood ran Orange."
