SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women's tennis head coach Younes Limam announced the 2017 schedule on Tuesday, Dec. 13. It is an impressive lineup for the spring that includes six teams that were ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association top 25 at the conclusion of last season.
"We are excited about our schedule, and I know our players will put in the work between now and the start of the season to come back ready to become one of the best teams in the country," Limam said. "Our regular season schedule will test us and bring out the best, which will get us ready for May."
The schedule includes nine home games held at Drumlins Country Club. The slate also includes 14 matches against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.
The Orange open the 2017 season in January on the road with matches against Yale (Jan. 21 at 10 a.m.) and Columbia (Jan. 22 at 11 a.m.). Then 'Cuse will participate in the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Michigan. The kickoff is an event that features the top teams in the country. Syracuse will face Mississippi State in the first game on Jan. 28 and will face the winner/loser of Michigan and Denver the next day.
In February, Syracuse will begin ACC play at Virginia (Feb. 4 at 9:30 a.m.). The Cavaliers ended last season ranked 13th in the country. The Orange will host Buffalo (Feb. 18 at 11 a.m.) and Brown (Feb. 19 at 11 a.m.) for the first home games of the season. The Orange will travel to Boston College (Feb. 26 at 11 a.m.) to close out February.
Syracuse will host Pittsburgh on March 3 at 1 p.m. before traveling to Notre Dame on March 5 for a 10 a.m. start time. A match against Navy (March 14) is followed by three straight home matches against Clemson (March 17 at 5 p.m.), Georgia Tech (March 26 at 11 a.m.) and Louisville (March 31 at 3 p.m.).
Play picks up in April with seven total matches during the month. The Orange will travel to Florida State (April 2 at 12 p.m.) and then return home for matches against NC State (April 7 at 3 p.m.) and Miami (April 9 at 11 a.m.). Three of Syracuse's last four matches are on the road against Virginia Tech (April 13 at 11 a.m.), Wake Forest (April 21 at 4 p.m.) and North Carolina (April 23 at 1 p.m.), but a home match against Duke is sandwiched in on April 15 at 11 a.m.
The ACC tournament will be played in Rome, Georgia beginning on April 26. NCAA Regionals will be played May 12-14 and the Championships will be May 19-29. The singles and doubles NCAA Championship will be May 24-29.
'Cuse is coming off a historic season in 2015-16 in which the Orange advanced to NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Syracuse made it to the second round with a win against Georgia State. Syracuse had three qualify for the individual NCAA Tournament in Anna Shkudun, Valeria Salazar and Gabriela Knutson. In the fall, Salazar and Knutson advanced to the semifinal round in doubles of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships after winning the regional title.
