On the eve of the 92nd meeting between Syracuse and Georgetown, a look back is in order. While it would be virtually impossible to pick out just 10 games from the 91 that have been played since the first meeting on Feb. 15, 1930, here's a shot at a "Top 10" from the Orange and the Hoyas -- slanted slightly from a Syracuse point of view:
- Syracuse 56, Georgetown 54 – March 15, 1992: Syracuse used a last-second shot by Dave Johnson to defeat the Hoyas and win the BIG EAST Conference Tournament title. Mike Hopkins had 15 points for the Orange as well. Alonzo Mourning earned tournament MVP honors after scoring 23 versus Syracuse.
- Georgetown 52, Syracuse 50 – February 12, 1980: Georgetown's Sleepy Floyd converted two free throws with five seconds remaining and the Hoyas ended #2 Syracuse's 57-game home winning streak at Manley Field House. After the game, Georgetown coach John Thompson proclaimed "Manley Field House is officially closed." The Orange moved into the Carrier Dome the next season.
- Syracuse 89, Georgetown 87, overtime – March 4, 1990: #10 Syracuse held off #7 Georgetown in the last regular-season game of the campaign at the Carrier Dome. Derrick Coleman and Billy Owens led the Orange with 27 and 23, respectfully. Owens made two free throws with one second left in regulation to force the extra session. Hoya coach John Thompson was ejected after earning three technical fouls during the course of play.
- Syracuse 75, Georgetown 73, overtime – March 7, 1986: In a BIG EAST Conference Tournament semifinal, Pearl Washington finished with 21 points while playing all 45 minutes for the #8 Orange. David Wingate had sent the game into overtime by canning a jumper with nine seconds left for the #14 Hoyas. Once in the extra session, Syracuse made 10-of-13 from the line to clinch the triumph.
- Syracuse 58, Georgetown 57, overtime – March 10, 2006: This triumph by the unranked Orange came during Gerry McNamara's dramatic four-game run to the BIG EAST Conference Tournament MVP award. This time, it was a McNamara pass instead of a shot that helped claim victory. His pass to Eric Devendorf led to a layup with nine seconds left and gave Syracuse its first advantage in the game against the #23 Hoyas.
- Syracuse 65, Georgetown 63 – January 28, 1985: Rafael Addison had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead #11 Syracuse past #1 Georgetown. It was Syracuse's first defeat of a top-ranked team. Pearl Washington converted a 15-footer with eight seconds left and added a free throw to give the 'Cuse a 64-63 victory. Patrick Ewing ended up with 21 points and 17 rebounds. The game included a few "flying oranges."
- Georgetown 82, Syracuse 71, overtime – March 9, 1984: Georgetown won the BIG EAST Tournament crown behind 27 points and 16 rebounds from Ewing. Washington had 27 for the Orange.
- Syracuse 93, Georgetown 84, overtime – March 1, 2003: In Syracuse's NCAA championship season, the 15th-ranked Orange rode a 30-point, 15-board showing by freshman Carmelo Anthony to beat the Hoyas in the MCI Center. McNamara had 10 of his 22 points in overtime and Hakim Warrick grabbed 18 rebounds.
- Georgetown 83, Syracuse 81, overtime – Jan. 31, 1987: #11 Georgetown used a bucket from Perry McDonald at the buzzer to defeat #6 Syracuse in overtime at the Capital Centre. McDonald had what was a career-best 21 points in support of a 30 points, 13 rebound effort by Reggie Williams.
- Syracuse 82, Georgetown 76, overtime – March 5, 1989: Derrick Coleman had his second, regular-season double-double against the Hoyas, posting 21 points and 13 rebounds to pace #6 Syracuse by #2 Georgetown. The Hoyas had led by 14 at one point. At the time, the crowd of 32,683 represented the largest on-campus attendance in NCAA history.
