Orange suffer 105-84 loss in non-conference finale
WINTER PARK, Fla. – The No. 19/16 Syracuse women's basketball closed its non-conference portion of the 2016-17 schedule with a 105-84 loss against Texas A&M at the Florida Sunshine Classic at Warden Arena on the campus of Rollins College on Wednesday afternoon.
"They (Texas A&M) did a very good job of attacking our press," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "We didn't turn them over. Our game is turning our opponents over, create more opportunities. We didn't do that."
Despite all-tournament performances from senior guard Alexis Peterson and redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes, the Orange (9-4) fell short in their final game at the Florida Sunshine Classic.
The Aggies (9-3) were an efficient 33-for-55 from the field, knocking down 60 percent of its shot attempts. In addition, Texas A&M converted 34-of-40 attempts from the charity stripe. It marked the second time this season Syracuse had surrendered at least 100 points to an opponent.
Peterson matched her career high with a 34-point game against the Aggies. It marked the first time an Orange player notched at least 30 points since Peterson did so against Wake Forest on March 5, 2015.
Sykes was one rebound shy of her 10th double-double of her collegiate career. The Newark, N.J. native notched 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals on the day.
Senior center Briana Day recorded her second double-double of the Florida Sunshine Classic, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds. Day moved into third place on the program's all-time rebounds list. The Raleigh, N.C. native has 929 boards in her career.
