Justyn Knight enters as the No. 3 seed in the event
Syracuse has six student-athletes set to compete at this week's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which begins on Friday in Birmingham, Alabama. Cuse.com will take an event-by-event look at each of the five events Syracuse will be competing in as we head towards the championships. Past Previews: men's mile, men's 60-meter hurdles, women's 60-meter dash, men's 5000-meters
The final Syracuse student-athlete to get his race underway at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be Justyn Knight, who's the only one of the six Orange runners to have his event begin on Saturday.
Knight is set to compete in the men's 3000-meter run. The Vaughan, Ontario native, who took fourth place at the NCAA Cross Country Championship this past fall, is seeded third. His time of 7:48.71 was marked at the Iowa State Classic, where he won the event by beating Stanford's Sean McGorty, who's seeded fourth this weekend behind Knight. Wisconsin's Morgan McDonald - the 14 seed also competed and finished third in that race.
The top seed, Oregon's Edward Cheserek leads the pack with a time of 7:40.51, 8 seconds ahead of the second seed, Patrick Tiernan of Villanova (7:48.55).
Knight is coming off an ACC Championship in the 3000-meters where he held off a late push from Virginia Tech's Thomas Curtin after passing him with shortly more than a lap and a half left.
In his first indoor season with the Orange, Knight is looking to pick up his third-straight USTFCCCA First Team All-America nod after earning the honor in the 5000-meters at last year's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and again at the NCAA Cross Country Championships earlier this season.
He'll get his chance at 6:10 p.m. on Saturday, with the event set to be broadcast on ESPN3.
