TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Syracuse softball team dropped two games to No. 10 Florida State 4-2, 4-1 on Saturday in ACC doubleheader action at JoAnne Graf Field.
Â
The Orange (11-12) produced five hits and three runs on the day, with two runs in the first game stemming from a sacrifice fly and a Seminole error, and an RBI single in the second game.
Â
Sammy Fernandez used a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning in the opening game to send Alyssa Dewes to home plate, while Maddi Doane drew an RBI base hit to first in the same inning in the second game, bringing Hannah Dossett to home plate.
Â
Dewes was responsible for three of the five total Orange hits on the day, racking up a triple and a double in the first game while registering a base hit in the latter game. The junior now has two triples on the season so far, while improving her slugging percentage to .811 on the season.
Â
Junior Sydney O'Hara closed the last 2.2 innings in the first game, allowing no hits, no runs, while retiring two batters. Sophomore AnnaMarie Gatti tossed the first 3.1 innings, allowing four hits, four runs, while striking out one batter.
Â
Senior Jocelyn Cater threw a complete game in the second matchup, registering three Ks while allowing six hits and four runs.
Â
GAME 1
Florida State (22-3) got on board early in the bottom of the first inning, as a single, a wild pitch, and an illegal pitch brought Seminole Alex Powers to third base. Another illegal pitch sent her home to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
Â
The Seminoles tacked on two more runs in the next inning off of an initial fielding error that set up an eventual RBI single to left field with one out on the boards. In the next at bat, a double to left center by Victoria East sent another one home to make it 3-0.
Â
The Orange answered back in the top of the third, with Dewes starting things off sending one to the center field warning tracks. In the next at bat, Fernandez registered a sacrifice fly to left field to send Dewes home, 3-1.
Â
Florida State tallied its final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth off of an attempted fielder's choice play at home that came up short. Syracuse made a final push in the top of the sixth inning, bringing in one more run thanks to a fielding error by the Seminoles that put senior Corinne Ozanne on base and welcomed Dewes to home plate.
Â
Those proved to be the final scoring plays, however, as both teams held each other hitless and scoreless in the last two at bats.
Â
GAME 2
Florida State got its scoring out of the way early on in the second game, as the Seminoles posted two runs apiece in the bottom of the first and second innings.
Â
A two-run home run by Seminole Alex Powers in the opening inning put the first two runs on the board. The first two at bats in the bottom of the second produced a base hit and a double down the right field line, sending the runner at first home. A sacrifice bunt sent the runner at second to third, and a fielder's choice play to second in the subsequent at bat brought the runner at third home to make it 4-0.
Â
After that, the Orange held the Seminoles scoreless for the rest of the way, allowing just two more Florida State hits on the day.
Â
Syracuse added a run of their own in the top of the third, after a Seminole throwing error and a base hit to second by Dewes put Dossett on second base with one out. A fielder's choice play at second with Fernandez at the plate advanced Dossett to third with two outs, and a single to first base from Doane sent Dossett to home plate.
Â
That's as far as either team would get, however, as the Seminoles did not allow another Orange hit after the third inning.
Â
Syracuse and Florida State match up one last time tomorrow, Mar. 20, with the first pitch taking place at noon.
