CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A huge, six run outburst in the second inning helped the Syracuse softball team get out to an early lead it'd never let up, defeating Virginia 8-4 on Sunday to take the rubber game of a three-game ACC set.
The Orange got on the board first after Alicia Hansen singled to center and the ball was then misplayed by the center fielder. Corrine Ozanne, who had singled to start the rally, scored on the play as well as Dossett, who scored on the error.
Danielle Chitkowski drove Hansen in on the next pitch on a single to right field, with Sammy Fernandez then bringing Chitkowski home on an infield single to make it 4-0. Sydney O'Hara hit a hard ground ball to short as well, reaching on an error, with Maddi Doane and Fernandez scoring on the play to cap the big inning at six.
Syracuse then got two more in the fifth. O'Hara homered to right field before Hansen doubled to left, scoring Rachel Burkhardt.
The Cavaliers attempted to rally in the bottom half of the inning though, After a single drove in the first UVA run, Hughes hit a three-run blast to right center to pull the Cavaliers within four.
Jocelyn Cater got the start for the Orange, pitching four innings and allowing four runs, five hits and striking out two, before O'Hara entered in relief and slammed the door. She struck out seven in her three innings of work.
Next, the Orange will play a midweek double header with in-state foe Canisius on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
