SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse softball team split its doubleheader with in-state foe Colgate on Wednesday, topping the Raiders 10-3 in the first game before coming up short 3-2 in the second at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Â
Home runs powered the Orange in the opening game, as seven of the 10 total RBIs were acquired from homers by seniors Danielle Chitkowski and Corinne Ozanne. Chitkowski sent one over the left center field fence in the bottom of the fourth inning with bases loaded for a grand slam, while Ozanne topped it off in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run blast past the right field fence for her 12th homer of the season.
Â
Sophomore Sammy Fernandez and junior Sydney O'Hara racked up two hits apiece in the first game, with Fernandez matching her hits with two RBIs. Fernandez finished the afternoon with three hits, placing her on a five-game hitting streak. Sophomore Rachel Burkhardt tallied a double in the opening game, her third of the season.
Â
Freshman Andrea Bombace and sophomore Maddi Doane posted doubles in the second game both in the first inning, as Doane's double eventually set up Bombace for her RBI double. Doane finished the second game 2-3 at the plate while recording her sixth double of the season.
Â
Senior Jocelyn Cater earned the win in the circle in the first game, allowing three runs off of seven hits while accumulating six strikeouts. O'Hara registered her fourth save of the season in the first game, stepping in the circle in the top of the fifth inning with the Orange up 6-3. She allowed just one more Raider hit in the game and no runs while racking up five Ks. Â
Â
GAME 1
The Raiders struck first in the top of the third, as a lead-off base hit and a sacrifice bunt set a runner up on second. Another base hit sent the runner to third, before she eventually advanced home in the next at bat after the Raider at first found her way out of a pickle attempting to go to second.
Â
Two more base hits both to left field sent the runner at first home to make it a 2-0 ballgame. Another run in the fourth inning off of a base hit to right field made it 3-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Syracuse didn't let the deficit hold them back, as the Orange stole the lead thanks to six runs off of five hits in the bottom of the fourth. A walk and two base hits placed Ozanne, O'Hara, and junior Alyssa Dewes on base, before Dossett walked to first to welcome Ozanne home. With the Orange down two, Chitkowski lifted the home team to a two-run advantage with a blast to left center field that took Dossett, Dewes, and O'Hara along with her for her second homer of the season.
Â
A double by Burkhardt in the next at bat and a consecutive base hit to right field by Fernandez sent Burkhardt home to give 'Cuse a 6-3 advantage.
Â
A ground out to second base by Fernandez with freshman Alicia Hansen at third put another run up on the boards in the bottom of the sixth, before Ozanne's three-run homer to right field made it a 10-3 ballgame, capping the victory for the Orange.
Â
GAME 2
The Orange strung two runs together right off the bat in the first inning, with Fernandez leading things off with a base hit to the shortstop. After Fernandez stole second, a double by Doane down the left field line set up Fernandez at third.
Â
Fernandez reached home plate after a sacrifice fly to left field by O'Hara, while an error on the throw to home triggered Doane to advance to third. Bombace's double down the left field line in the next at bat welcomed Doane home easily to give the Orange a 2-0 advantage.
Â
A three-run double to left center field in the top of the fourth inning, however, proved to be the game's deciding factor, as the Raiders held on to the one-run advantage the rest of the way. The fourth inning began with a walk and a single to third, setting two runners up on base. A foul out and a strike out put two outs on the board right after, but another walk loaded the bases up for the Raiders.
Â
Riding on two outs, a double to deep left center by Colgate's leading hitter Katie Bushee sent all three runners on base home, giving the Raiders the 3-2 win over the Orange.
Â
Syracuse resumes ACC play this weekend while heading back on the road, facing ACC foe Louisville in a three-game series beginning on Saturday. The Orange and the Cardinals start things off with a doubleheader on Saturday slated for 12 p.m. The weekend concludes with a single game on Sunday beginning at noon.
