Hehir earns third honor of his collegiate career
AUSTIN, Texas – For the third time, Martin Hehir has been named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Track and Field/Cross Country Team. Colin Bennie joined Hehir, collecting his first CoSIDA Academic All-America honor of his collegiate career.
Hehir closed out his Orange career with four-straight All-America honors between cross country and track and field after wrapping up his eligibility during the 2015 cross country season. This marks the second time he has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and Hehir was one of eight repeat selections.
The Washingtonville, N.Y. native placed ninth at the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship, his best finish in his career, while in the biomedical forensics graduate program at Syracuse after earning degrees in biology and Spanish last spring.
He finished his career with three ACC championships (2013, 2014 cross country titles and 2015 indoor 5000-meter championship) and was named the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year three times (twice in cross country, once in indoor track and field). He was named the Doris Soladay Award winner at the 10th annual 'Cuse Awards, which is considered the highest honor an Orange student-athlete can receive.
Bennie was another major factor in Syracuse's NCAA cross country championship and ACC indoor track and field title this season. The sophomore finished eighth at the NCAA Cross Country Championship and went on to be an All-American in the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, as well.
A political science major, Bennie was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team.
