Former Orange student-athlete turned communications award winner
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Keri Potts ('98, G '99), a former Syracuse volleyball student-athlete and the current Senior Director of Communications for ESPN, has been named to PRWeek's 2016 40 Under 40 list for her impressive work with ESPN's communication strategies.
The Smithtown, N.Y. native earned the honor recognizing the most pivotal communications and public relations professionals on all platforms. Potts, along with 39 honorees, will be celebrated on Thursday, October 13 at an awards ceremony in New York City. Tickets for attendance are available for purchase on the PRWeek website, events.prweek.com/40-under-40.
Potts began her athletic and communications career at Syracuse University, where she excelled both athletically and academically. In the classroom, Potts earned a Bachelor's degree in magazine journalism in three years at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and went on to maintain a perfect 4.00 grade-point average within her Master's degree in public relations and organizational management.
Among many honors, Potts was named to the Syracuse University Athletics Director's Honor Roll four times, while also earning 1998 BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors. In December of 1998, Potts was named to the GTE Academic All-America First Team, becoming the first of any Syracuse volleyball program member in school history to receive the honor. To top off her collegiate academic accolades, Potts was awarded 1999 Doris Soladay Female Athlete of the Year honors, the highest accolade to be earned by a Syracuse student-athlete.
Potts got her first taste in public relations by working as a student intern in the Syracuse Athletic Communications department. The combination of her expertise as a student-athlete and experience in the athletic department led Potts to securing her first job post-graduation as a publications editor for the NCAA in Indianapolis.
Potts left the NCAA to accept a job as a senior publicist at ESPN in 2003, and has since worked her way up within the organization. She has had many successes within ESPN over the last 13 years, including her promotion of the ESPY Awards and her help in the creation of the 30 for 30 ESPN Films division. Most recently, Potts spearheaded the communications strategies regarding the startup of the SEC Network in its inaugural year.
Since beginning a career in sports communication and media, Potts has evolved her career within ESPN, as she now holds the Senior Director of Communications title for ESPN and continues to emulate success at one of the highest levels of sports communication and public relations.
Potts was recently inducted into the Professional Portrait Gallery in 2011 amongst 40 other S.I. Newhouse graduates.
