The No. 2 Syracuse field hockey team started its 2016 season off in dominant fashion, rolling to an 8-0 win over Temple, which entered the contest receiving votes in the NFHCA poll.
Â
Five different members of the Orange found the back of the net in Friday's season-opening win, which was the 500th victory as a program for Syracuse. Lies Lagerweij, Jen Bleakney and Emma Lamison each scored twice in the victory, while Elaine Carey and Bleakney scored their first collegiate goals in the win.
The goals came early and often for 'Cuse, which outshot the Owls 22-3 in the win.
Â
Bleakney buried the first goal of the game for Syracuse on an assist from Liz Sack. Bleakney fired from the top left side of the circle and beat Temple goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock to the lower right corner of the cage.
Â
Sack then set her teammate Lamison up for the second tally just two minutes later, when the Orange attacked the right hand side of the cage and Lamison finished the second goal for SU with 13 minutes elapsed in the season. Roos Weers got in the mix next on a pass from newcomer Elaine Carey off a penalty corner 21 minutes into play.
Â
Syracuse drew seven penalty corners in the contest and didn't yield any to Temple.
Â
'Cuse tallied one more goal in the first half off the stick of Jen Bleakney, who turned around and fired a high shot past Lilliock for the goal.
Â
The Orange picked up right where they left off in the second, with Lamison finishing a pass from Weers less than six minutes after intermission to make it 5-0. Five minutes later, Weers set up fellow back Lagerweij off a corner play to give 'Cuse a half-dozen goal lead.
Â
Carey's first-career goal came off a pass hard pass from Caroline Cady in the circle with just-over 20 minutes left in regularion, before Lagerweij scored on a penalty stroke in the waning moments to finish the game.
Â
Regan Spencer got the start in cage for Syracuse, stopping the only shot that Temple put on net, recording a shutout in her first collegiate start.
Â
The Orange extended its regular season win streak to 21-straight games, which will next be tested by its first top-10 opponent of the year, when 'Cuse plays No. 6 Maryland on Sunday at noon in Philadelphia.
