Syracuse rising junior Laura Hurff is just a few days from preseason training with the Orange, but she's already received an honor this season, when U.S. U21 coach Janneke Schopman officially tabbed her to the 2016 Junior World Cup Roster on Wednesday.
The event, which runs from Nov. 23 to Dec. 4 in Santiago, Chile, features 16 of the world's top teams from six continents. Schopman named 14 players to the squad on Wednesday, with four spots still up for grabs on the 18 player roster.
"After a summer full of training the U-21 Junior World Cup selection is coming together slowly," Schopman said. "After a camp in May where the team outlined their goals for the upcoming months and played Chile Women's National Team, we played as a team in the Young Women's National Championship (YWNC). During this tournament we were able to train together and play a couple of games in which we worked on specific areas such as transition from attack to defense and circle attack."
This isn't the first time Hurff has played in a major tournament at the international level, claiming silver at the Pan American Games in Trinidad and Tobago this spring before she and the U21 team won gold at the Young Women's National Championship this summer.
An NFHCA First Team All-American and Second Team All-ACC selection last season, Hurff started all-22 games in the Orange midfield, posting three goals and three assists as she helped lead the Orange to its first NCAA Championship in program history.
Hurff's selection continues head coach Ange Bradley's trend of leading athletes to the U.S. national and age-group teams. Alyssa Manley is set to represent the U.S. in the Olympics this week, the second-straight Olympics a member of the Orange has been on the USWNT after Shannon Taylor was on the squad in 2012. Goalkeeper Jess Jecko was also appointed to the U.S. National Team following this Olympic cycle.
In addition, Jennifer Bleakney played on the U.S. U19 squad this summer in Germany.
Hurff and the Orange will open their 2016 campaign on August 26 at Temple.
