After leading the No. 2 Orange to an 8-0 shutout win over Temple on Friday and following that up with a five-save effort in a 4-1 win over No. 6 Maryland on Sunday, Syracuse senior goalkeeper Regan Spencer has been named NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week.
Spencer, who earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, has played the first 140 minutes of action without allowing a goal during play. Her only blemish on the season came after the Terps were awarded an early penalty stroke opportunity in Sunday's 4-1 win.
Spencer's two starts serve as the first two of her collegiate career after playing the backup role to U.S. National Team member Jess Jecko for her first-three seasons on campus.
In addition to Spencer's ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors, Orange sophomore forward Jen Bleakney claimed ACC Offensive Player of the Week accolades after scoring three goals during the opening weekend.
Next, Syracuse will continue its four-game road trip to start the season, facing No. 13 Liberty on Saturday and Hofstra on Sunday in non-conference action. 'Cuse's first home affair will take place on Friday, Sept. 9 against ACC rival Boston College at 3:30 p.m. That contest will also serve as the unveiling of the 2015 NCAA Championship banner.
