Carey and Weers Sweep ACC Weekly Awards
9/13/2016 5:05:00 PM | Field Hockey
Another Syracuse duo has swept ACC Player of the Week honors, with Elaine Carey earning ACC Offensive Player of the Week and Roos Weers collecting ACC Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Â
The pair are the fourth and fifth players to earn ACC weekly honors for the No. 1 Orange this season through the first three weekends, joining Regan Spencer and Lies Lagerweij who previously won defensive player of the week honors after the first and second week respectively and Jennifer Bleakney who claimed offensive honors in the first week.
Carey netted a breakaway goal in Friday's 3-1 victory over No. 18 Boston College to move SU to 1-0 in ACC play. The goal came after a long pass from Weers allowed Carey's speed to stretch the defense. On Sunday, the Galway, Ireland native netted the eventual game winner over No. 14 Stanford by deflecting a hard shot from Laura Hurff into the top of the net.
Besides Weers' assist on Carey's goal Friday, she also scored a goal of her own in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Cardinal to sweep the weekend vs. a pair of ranked opponents. Weers headlined the Orange defense that held both opponents to a combined 10 shots over the two contests.
Â
Next for Syracuse will be its third-straight ranked test vs. No. 11 Wake Forest on the road Sunday.
