Hurff and Ulbrich's Big Days Leads 'Cuse Past Penn

The No. 1 Syracuse field hockey team (8-1, 2-1 ACC) used a dominant second half performance to defeat Penn (5-2) 4-0 in commanding fashion on Sunday at J.S. Coyne Stadium.

After scoring once in the first half, 'Cuse registered three more in the second, in a game which the Orange outshot the Quakers 29-9.
After early pressure from the Quakers kept the game scoreless through the beginning of the first half, the Orange broke through on one of its first opportunities of the game. Receiving a pass from Annalena Ulbrich, Laura Hurff fired a hard backhanded shot that sailed perfectly into the top left corner of the net to put SU up just 9:05 into the game.

The rest of the half remained scoreless, with goalie Regan Spencer making three saves to preserve the Orange shutout going into the break.

Coming back out for the second half, the Orange added two quick insurance goals to widen the gap.

Roos Weers notched the second goal of the game, and the first of the half, on a penalty corner with 26 minutes remaining. Again, Ulbrich recorded the assist, her second of the game.

Just over two minutes later, Ulbrich added to her point total with a goal of her own. Hurff sent a ball into the circle, which Ulbrich turned and chipped over the shoulder of Penn netminder Liz Mata.

Mata recorded 13 saves in the loss.

For the remainder of the game, the Orange would continue to pressure the Quakers, outshooting Penn 18-3 in the second half and 29-9 in the game as a whole.

With time running off the clock and ultimately expiring, Syracuse earned a final penalty corner, which Hurff capitalized on for her second goal of then game. Elaine Carey was credited with the assist on the final play of the game.
