Orange Conclude Road Trip with 5-1 Win
9/4/2016 2:40:00 PM | Field Hockey
The No. 2 Syracuse field hockey team (4-0) ended its four-game road trip to start the season with a 5-1 victory at Hofstra in which the Orange controlled possession and outshot the Pride by a staggering 33-7 margin.
Four different players scored in the game for 'Cuse and the SU defensive unit allowed just five shots on net, four of which were turned away by Lucy Camlin in her first collegiate start.
Lies Lagerweij picked up right where she left off after her two-goal effort in Saturday's overtime victory over No. 13 Liberty. She notched the first goal of the afternoon for Syracuse, 25 minutes into action.
Â
Lagerweij's goal came off a corner play, where Roos Weers slid the ball to Lagerweij who fired a low shot into the net. It was the third goal in 32 minutes of on-field play for Lagerweij after she netted both the late equalizer in the 68th minute and overtime winner less than three minutes into extra time for SU on Saturday.
Â
Her goal on Sunday served as the only tally of the first half and the Orange went to the locker room with a 1-0 lead. However, 'Cuse turned up the pressure in the second half.
Â
Less than five minutes into the second half, Syracuse would again capitalize on a corner play. Weers scored one of her own this time off a clean corner play, with Jennifer Bleakney and Elaine Carey both recording assists as the inserter and stick stop respectively.
Â
Just six minutes later the Pride answered though, with Claudia Marin Samper scoring off an initial Camlin save to make it back into a one-goal game. Laura Hurff managed to find the back of the net shortly after, when she fired a shot shortly after moving into the arc following a restart.
Â
Carey then opened it up in the 56th minute when she scored off a pass from Emma Lamison to make it into a 4-1 game.
Â
Lagerweij then tacked on the final goal, her second-straight two-goal effort, on a backhanded shot moving to her left with less than four minutes remaining.
Â
In addition to the 33-7 margin in shots, Syracuse also drew eight corners to Hofstra's one and recorded 19 shots on goal compared to the home team's five.
Â
Carys Swan turned away 14 of the Orange's shots on the afternoon but it wasn't enough to overcome the Syracuse attack.
Â
Next, 'Cuse returns home for both its ACC and home openers, hosting Boston College on Friday, Sept. 9 at 3:30 p.m.
