SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's tennis team will begin the 2017 season with two matches on the road this weekend. The Orange will travel to Yale on Saturday, Jan. 21 and to Columbia on Sunday, Jan. 22.
Syracuse will look to continue its success from last spring and this fall as they begin a fresh slate in 2017. Last season, the Orange advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history as a team and had three individuals qualify for the NCAA Individual Tournament.
In the fall, 'Cuse put together an impressive stretch. Valeria Salazar and Gabriela Knutson claimed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional title in doubles and Salazar earned the singles title. The two advanced to the National ITA tournament and made it to the semifinals.
The Orange will come into the match with a pair ranked by the ITA. Salazar holds a No. 38 national ranking and a No. 1 northeast regional ranking in singles. Salazar and Knutson were ranked No. 10 nationally and are the top doubles duo in the region.
It will be the first match of the season for Yale on Saturday as well. The Bulldogs will be led by a pair who were recognized by the ITA northeast regional division. Freshman Madison Battaglia was placed at No. 14 in singles. Battaglia and junior Valerie Shklover came in at No. 8 in doubles.
Columbia opened its season with a 5-2 loss to Florida State on Monday, Jan. 16. Five Lions players were ranked in the Northeast Region. Andrea Kevakian comes in at No. 9, Rima Asatrian is ranked No. 15 and Ali Pollack holds a No. 19 ranking.
Members from Syracuse and Columbia met in the fall season at the Columbia and Cornell Invitationals.
