Orange Win Mile Races on Both Coasts
1/28/2017 7:40:00 PM | Track and Field
Two major mile races on opposite coasts of the country, two Syracuse winners.
Â
Adam Palamar took home the victory at the John Thomas Invitational (3:57.39) in Boston and Justyn Knight won the UW Invitational (3:59.54) in Seattle to cement a pair of Syracuse victories.
Knight was one-of-three runners to go sub-four minutes in the mile and the only collegian to do so. He out-kicked two-time Olympian Andrew Wheating and Brannon Kidder down the stretch to win his event.
Palamar won his meet by nearly a fill second. He beat out Michigan's trio of Ned Willig, William Sheeran and Connor Mora, who finished second through fourth, respectively. Freshman Aidan Tooker finished seventh overall in the event, crossing the line in 4:02.11.
In addition, Nick Ryan (4:15.22/32nd), TJ Hornberger (4:16.23/34th), Robert Hall (4:18.23/46th) and Andy Paladino (4:19.17/54th) also turned in strong performances in the mile.
'Cuse continued its success over to the 3000-meters. Iliass Aouani (7:57.64) took third overall, followed closely by Colin Bennie (7:58.15) who finished 5th. Adam Visokay (8:17.21) finised 20th in the 91 racer field.
Â
In the 5k, Joe Dragon (14:24.22) led the way for the Orange with a fifth-place finish. Dominic Hockenbury (14:41.63) placed 18th, Kevin James (14:48.44) took 21st, Simon Smith (14:51.39) finished 28th and Griff Molino (15:02.22) crossed the line in 42nd in a field that featured 86 runners.
Â
Paul Lovell (1:52.61) placed 19th in the 800-meters, while teammate Sam Somera turned in a PR time of 1:59.04, which was good for 73rd in the 123 racer field.
Â
Syracuse returns to Boston University next week for the Scarlet and White Invitational, while other members of the squad will attend the Harvard Crimson Elite.
