SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team (1-3-1, 0-0-0) posted its first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Providence (3-2-0, 1-0-0), Friday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Despite being outshot 32-24, the Orange emerged victorious thanks to a pair of goals by Kelli Rowswell and Brooke Avery.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange recorded 15 first period shots, keeping the pressure on the Providence goalie, which ultimately resulted in Roswell's second goal of the season to give Syracuse the 1-0 lead with 26 seconds left in the first period.
Three minutes into the second period, Rowswell ricocheted a puck off the right post but Avery was there to pick up the rebound and blast it into the back of the net, making it 2-0 Orange. The Friars got on the board with a power play goal by Blair Parent but 'Cuse held on to take the victory.
OF NOTE
Goalie Abbey Miller posted her fifth consecutive game with 30+ saves after making 31 stops against Providence in goal for the Orange.
Senior Alysha Burriss and redshirt sophomore Lindsay Eastwood each tallied their first assists of the season on the Avery and Rowswell goals, respectively.
