Orange Edged by No. 1 Wisconsin

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior goaltender Abbey Miller posted a career-high 38 saves as the Orange were just edged by Wisconsin, 1-0, in the first home game of the season, Friday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange battled in the faceoff circle, winning 53 percent of their draws, but were outshot 39-20 in the game.
"I liked our compete level. The kids really competed from start to finish," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "This is how you get better, by playing teams like this. We were in there until the end in a 1-0 game."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The game remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes of action, as Miller was a wall in front of the net, making 17 saves in the first period alone. Abbey Roque scored the game-winner for Wisconsin on a top-shelf shot to the upper right corner of the goal late in the second period.
OF NOTE
Miller has now recorded at least 30 saves in three consecutive games to start the season. In 31 games played in 2016-17, the goalie only posted one game with 30+ saves when she made 35 stops against Colgate in a game that resulted in a 2-2 tie for the Orange.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"[Miller] gave us a chance to win, from start to finish," said Flanagan. "She was making saves, covering loose pucks and directing rebounds, and that is what you like to see from your starting goalie."
UP NEXT
The Orange and the Badgers close out the two-game set on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y. Following the series, Syracuse will host Providence for a pair of games on Oct. 13 and 14 in Tennity Ice Pavilion.
