Â
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's basketball team hosts the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for its second game of the 2017-18 season after defeating Morgan State in its home opener on Friday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and fans can purchase tickets online, by phone at (1-888-DOMETIX) or at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
The Orange currently stand at 1-0 on the season after an electric start to the 2017-18 campaign. Syracuse pinned 95 points on Morgan State, tying the program record for the most points scored in the first contest of the year.
Â
In addition to the team's success, five players recorded double-digit games, Digna Strautmane (17 pts), Miranda Drummond (15 pts), Isis Young (13 pts), Amaya Finklea Guity (12 pts), and Brandi Fowler (11 pts). Strautmane also recorded her first career double-double totaling 17 points and 11 rebounds in the contest.
The Hawks are 1-1 on the season after winning against Valley Forge 92-38 and, most recently, losing a tough contest against Buffalo, 76-41. Jordyn Smith paces Maryland Eastern Shore, averaging 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Â
Series History
Tomorrow's contest marks the teams' fifth meeting in program history, all of which are under the instruction of head coach Quentin Hillsman. The last time the teams met, Syracuse topped the Hawks in a crushing defeat of 114-42 at the Carrier Dome in 2013. The Orange recorded a season-best 31 forced-turnovers. Then sophomore, Brianna Butler led the Orange on offense posting 23 points in the contest while 12 total Syracuse players recorded a point in the game.
Â
Creating Opportunities
Much of Syracuse's success can be attributed to its system that preaches creating more possessions and maximizing points per possession. The Orange look to gain more possessions than its opposition by collecting offensive rebounds and forcing turnovers on the defensive end.
Â
The Orange notched 31 offensive rebounds against Morgan State, leading to 29 second-chance points for Syracuse. This was almost double the number of offensive rebounds averaged by 'Cuse in 2016-17 (17.0). Strautmane and Drummond tied for the team lead against Morgan State, each pulling down six offensive boards.
Â
In addition, the squad forced the Bears to turn over the ball 29 times in the season opener, a boost from the 21.9 forced turnovers averaged last season. Seven different Orange players notched a steal in Friday's contest against Morgan State, led by guard Tiana Mangakahia, who posted three in the game. 'Cuse capitalized on turnovers during the outing, posting 39 points off turnovers against Morgan State.
