SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's hockey team kept rolling on Friday night with a 3-0 shutout win against Mercyhurst at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
"They came at us in the first period pretty hard, we just had to settle down and make the little plays and keep it simple," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "Holding them to under 15 shots was good for us. Our penalty kill sent a message to not only them, but our team as well, of what we're capable of when we work together."
Freshman Savannah Rennie scored first for the Orange with less than a minute left in the first period. Rennie sniped the puck into the top corner of the goal past the Mercyhurst goaltender on a Syracuse power play. It was Rennie's third power play goal this season, the most on the team.
Alysha Burriss added two more goals in the third period to give Syracuse breathing room. The two goals bring Burriss' season total to nine and 19 points. With 32 career goals, Burriss is now tied with Jessica Sibley in ninth place in Syracuse career goal scoring history.
It was the seventh shutout of the season for Syracuse and the sixth for goaltender Abbey Miller. That mark ties the Syracuse single-season record.
The Orange (11-11-5, 10-3-2) have now won six of the last seven games and sit firmly in second place in College Hockey America with an eight-point lead on third-place Penn State.
Syracuse wore camouflage jerseys for the game as part of military appreciation. Those jerseys are now up for bidding through an online auction, found here. Proceeds go to the Syracuse VA Medical Center.
'Cuse and Mercyhurst will square off again on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
