UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Syracuse women's hockey offense flourished in a 5-1 victory against Penn State on Friday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa.
"We were a little shorthanded today with Heather Schwarz and Jessica Sibley not in the lineup, but we received some timely scoring from four different players and an excellent job by our defensive corps and Abbey Miller in net," head coach Paul Flanagan said.
Freshman Savannah Rennie led the Orange scoring initiative with the first two goals of the game, both coming in the second period. Rennie's second goal was eventually the game-winner for Syracuse, her third of the season. The freshman now has eight goals to go with eight assists for her rookie year.
Junior Emily Costales had a career-high three assists on the day, facilitating both of Rennie's goals. With the three helpers, Costales is now the team's assist-leader for the season with 16.
Sophomore Allie Munroe scored the third goal of the game for Syracuse five minutes into the third period. Her goal was set up by Alysha Burriss and Morgan Blank.
Sophomore Sarah Stuehr scored the first goal of her career in the third period. She was assisted by Brooke Avery and Dakota Derrer. Stephanie Grossi scored her 14th goal of the season to round out the Orange scoring.
Junior goaltender Abbey Miller had 16 saves and allowed only one Nittany Lion goal during the game. She is now sporting a 1.67 goals against average for the season, the best average in the league.
Since the winter break, 13 different Orange members have scored a goal. In all, Syracuse is outscoring opponents 43-23 since the New Year throughout 13 games in 2017.
Syracuse (14-12-5, 13-4-2 CHA) will conclude the regular season on Saturday with the second game of the weekend at Penn State (9-19-5, 8-9-2 CHA). Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. A live stream will be available and live stats will be provided.
