Syracuse Ends Regular Season with Victory at Pitt

Orange record 20 wins in eighth straight season
PITTSBURGH – The No. 20/21 Syracuse women's basketball team picked up its 20th win of the season, a 73-57 decision at Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
In the first period, Syracuse (20-9) took a 24-16 lead backed by a 9-0 run at the end of the period. Redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes had five of those nine points. Pitt (13-16) cut into the lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Orange, 17-15, in the frame. The Panthers scored 12 straight points during a stretch in the period. The Orange went 6:27 without a field goal during the second period, but led, 39-33, at halftime.
In the second half, Pitt was able to get within four points of Syracuse, but a 13-3 run in the fourth quarter put the Orange ahead for good.

"I'm really happy for our kids and I'm really proud of them. We lose five seniors and we still come into the best conference in the country and find a way to win 11 games, starting a freshman. It's a remarkable feat for our kids. I couldn't be happier or more proud of them."
OF NOTE
For the seventh straight game, senior center Briana Day, senior guard Alexis Peterson, and Sykes all scored in double figures for the Orange.
Peterson finished with 25 points and six assists on the day. It was the 20th time this season the senior has scored 20 or more points and the second straight.
Sykes had 21 points and nine rebounds in the game. It was her 14th game with 20 or more points this season.
Briana Day had her ninth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Orange were strong from the charity stripe, making 25-33 of their free throws, The 33 attempts were a season high for the Orange and the 25 makes were one shy of tying the season high.
Syracuse turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, turning the Panthers over 10 times converting to 14 points. Overall, Pitt had 18 turnovers in the game.

Syracuse will open play at the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Conway, S.C. on Thursday. The Orange will be the sixth seed in the tournament.
