Â
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 21/20 Syracuse women's basketball team opens postseason play on Thursday night in the second round of the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C. Syracuse will play North Carolina at 8 p.m.
Â
Thursday's game will be shown locally on the YES Network with Tom Werme (play-by-play) and Debbie Antonelli (analyst) on the call. Brian Higgins '04 will be on the call on Syracuse IMG Sports Network. As always, follow @CuseWBB on Twitter for live in-game updates.
Â
In their last outing, the Orange tallied a 73-57 victory in their regular-season finale at Pittsburgh on Feb. 26. With its win against the Panthers, Syracuse has won at least 20 games in eight consecutive seasons.
Â
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
Much of Syracuse's success can be attributed to its system that preaches creating more possessions and maximizing points per possession. Associate head coach Vonn Read has played a significant role in developing the team's formula for success.
Â
Syracuse looks to gain more possessions than its opposition by collecting offensive rebounds and forcing turnovers on the defensive end. The Orange currently leads the Atlantic Coast Conference and ranks 10th nationally in offensive boards, averaging 17 offensive rebounds per game. In addition, the squad paces the league and ranks third in the country in turnovers forced, notching 22.3 forced turnovers per contest.
Â
To maximize its points per possession, Syracuse has not shied away from shooting the 3-point field goal. The Orange averages 8.9 3-point field goals made per game, which leads the conference and ranks ninth in the nation.
Â
HILLSMAN MAKING HISTORY
Prior to head coach Quentin Hillsman's appointment, Syracuse touted a 418-452 (.480) overall record, three trips to the NCAA Tournament, and zero NCAA Tournament victories in 35 seasons.
Â
In 11 seasons as the head coach of the Syracuse women's basketball program, Hillsman owns a 239-125 (.657) overall record. The Orange have participated in five NCAA Tournaments, earning seven victories.
Â
Since the start of the 2006-07 campaign, Syracuse has recorded 20 victories against opponents ranked in the top 25 of the USA Today Coaches Poll. In the 23 seasons prior (the coaches' rankings began during the 1984-85 season), the program only recorded eight wins against nationally-ranked foes.
