Syracuse University sophomore Maria Tritou won the fourth singles match in a tiebreaker to give the Orange tennis team a 4-3 victory against Clemson on Friday at Drumlins Tennis Club. The Orange (5-7 overall, 2-3 ACC) started the match with victories in second and third doubles to win the doubles point against the Tigers (5-8, 2-4). Sophomore Dina Hegab and graduate student Anna Shkudun won second doubles, 6-4, and Tritou and senior Nicole Mitchell scored a 6-3 win in the third doubles spot.
Â
"I could not be more proud of this team," said head coach Younes Limam. "I think they did a phenomenal job, especially when it came down to the last match. They really sent Masha (Tritou) that positive vibe helping her throughout the match to clinch the win for the team. This is huge for us to get the ACC victory. Hopefully this will help us down the road. This will give us a lot of positive energy going forward in the ACC."
Â
Orange freshman Miranda Ramirez won the second singles match, beating Fernanda Navarro, 6-1, 6-1, and Hegab won sixth singles for Syracuse, beating Clemson's Ally Miller-Krasilnikov, 7-5, 6-4, giving Syracuse the 4-3 victory. Ramirez extended her win streak to nine and improved her season singles record to 10-1.
Â
Clemson won first singles, with Ayan Broomfield beating Shkudun, 6-1, 6-0, third singles, with Marie-alexandre Leduc defeating Gabriela Knutson, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), and fifth singles, with Constanza Gorches beating Libi Mesh, 6-4, 6-3.
Syracuse will take the court again on Sunday, March 26 when Georgia Tech visits Drumlins Tennis Club for an Atlantic Coast Conference match at 11 a.m. Admission is free.
