Hey 'Cuse fans! Syracuse volleyball will be releasing a weekly offseason blog with one entry from each student-athlete. This week marks the ninth installment of our 'Offseason Updater' with an excerpt from assistant coach Matt Johann.
Name: Matt Johann
Postition: Assistant Coach
Alma Mater: Juniata College, 2014
Hometown: Long Island, N.Y.
Coach Johann: This week we are preparing for one of our Spring competition dates. We will travel to Colgate University on Saturday for a five-team tournament that will run all day long. This is exciting as we can see as a team how the last few weeks of practices and workouts will come together.
I enjoy the spring tournaments because coaches are all looking for the same things for their team – experience. Most tournaments are competitive in skill, but have the mentality of growth for future success. This is great for us as a team to focus in on a few important tasks during the day and have the opportunity to slow down and teach if we need to. It's similar to the way we have been practicing, taking skills and building a solid foundation to add all the right pieces.
Aside from tournaments, coaches have been recruiting, which is a great part of what we do. Meeting new people that we can help with their next step in life is a special task. There is more than the playing ability of the athlete, as their personality and mentality help to grow the championship culture. I am excited to see how our spring can continue to grow our team and what we will be able to accomplish in the fall!
